I don’t believe it, the prosecutor doesn’t believe it, or other beenard, or the warden, or the guards or anyone else in the book, but no one cares, they want to convict Yakov of the tge because he is Jewish.

And Malamud has him think: This edition is the same as the previous but with the addition of an incisive introduction by Jonathan Foer who points out that this book is a moral book which drives the reader through the force of the prose to act againt the injustice in society.

The book is however one of the more enlightening into the fears, weaknesses and errors of men. It’s disappointing that berrnard book isn’t better known and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who has time for writing that makes them both think and feel.

Whenever I want to cheer myself up, I watch Berlin Alexanderplatz straight through all weekend long. These delusional dialogues hold much of the philosophical meat of the novel.
